Services for treatment and care of mentally ill persons are as follows
1. National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore
NIMHANS is situated in Bangalore. The institution is presently a Deemed University. Has been declared as an “Institute of National Importance”. The hospital offers out-patient and in-patient services in psychiatry. Psychiatric facilities include 2 closed pavilions, 7 open wards for 650 beds. Separate facilities are provided children (20 bedded ward), Family therapy (14 Rooms), alcohol and drug de-addiction (60beds). Casualty and emergency services for psychiatric and neurological/neurosurgical emergencies. All supportive investigations, hematological, bio-chemical, radiological including CT and MRI are available. NIMHANS has a full-fledged community mental health unit, which runs a rural mental health centre at Sakalavara village, Bangalore. NIMHANS also conduct camps on selected Tuesdays at Anekal, Gunjur, Kanakapura,Maddur, Madhugiri, Gouribidanur, Nirashrithara Parihara Kendra- Bangalore
Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (DIMHANS), Dharwad.
DIMHANS is situated in Dharwad district of North Karnataka. It was established in the year 1845.There are 375 beds. As per recommendations of NIMHANS and Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka. New building consisting of New OPD block, emergency ward, ECT room, store room, laboratory, 8 open wards of 20 beds each. The institute caters to the needs of nearly 400 -450 patients per day who visit from majority districts of North Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Maharashtra. The institute offers psychiatry services on outpatient and in-patient basis; it has separate de-addiction ward, Forensic ward, special wards and psychiatric rehabilitation centre. Lawyers form District legal services, Dharwad offer free legal services for mentally ill patients on every Wednesday and Friday.
